Italy --Engineers have finally come up with a viable
solution to slow down the seemingly unstoppable tilt of Italy's most famous
Romanesque relic, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. After years of more
or less fruitless attempts to halt the inevitable, the simplest and
perhaps most obvious of all possibilities is now the one being
employed. The gradual removal of earth from underneath the
northern side has allowed the tower to already settle back one-half
inch into a far less critical position, giving it another 300 years
of
worry-free leaning. The project has been so successful that the
steel supports currently keeping the tower erect could be removed
as early as June 2001, by which time the tilt will have been
straightened by nearly 10 percent. The legendary tower, though,
